How It Works
The calculator multiplies your floor area by published per-square-foot price ranges. Material is priced on the area plus your waste percentage, because offcuts get paid for; labor is priced on the bare floor area, because installers quote on what they lay. Metric entries are converted with 1 ft = 0.3048 m, so 1 m² = 10.764 sq ft.
The ranges are transcribed, unchanged, from the HomeAdvisor cost guides for tile, laminate, vinyl and hardwood (updated June 2026) and the HomeGuide carpet guide (October 2025). The table under the calculator shows the exact figures and links. Quality tier does not invent a new number: it narrows the survey’s material range to its lower, middle or upper third, so a “basic” laminate at $1–$2.83 per sq ft and a “premium” one at $4.67–$6.50 both sit inside the guide’s $1–$6.50. Labor is left at the full survey range because crew rates do not track material grade.
Low and high are the ends of the combined range; ~typical is the midpoint. What moves a real quote inside the range: material grade and size, subfloor levelling or repair, removal and disposal of the old floor, stairs and transitions, and the local labor market. None of those are in the survey figures except as the spread itself.
Boxes to buy divides the material area (with waste) by the coverage printed on the carton and rounds up.
Worked Example
A 200 sq ft bedroom in mid-tier luxury vinyl plank with 10% waste: material area is 220 sq ft. The LVP guide range is $3–$10 per sq ft, so the middle third is $5.33–$7.67, giving ~$1,173–$1,687 for planks. Labor at $3–$10 per sq ft on 200 sq ft is ~$600–$2,000. Total: ~$1,773 low, ~$2,730 typical, ~$3,687 high. If the cartons cover 20 sq ft each, 220 ÷ 20 = 11 boxes.
FAQ
Why is porcelain’s low end below ceramic’s?
That is how HomeAdvisor’s tile table reads: glazed ceramic $4–$15 and porcelain $2–$15 per sq ft. Builder-grade porcelain is sold in volume; the ceramic figure is for glazed floor-rated tile. Labor for both is the same $3–$15 because setting time depends on tile size and layout, not the clay body.
Does the estimate include removing the old floor?
No. The HomeAdvisor guides price removal separately: $2–$7 per sq ft for tile and $1–$5 for carpet. Add it on top if the room is not down to subfloor.
Which waste percentage should I use?
10% is the usual allowance for a straight lay in a rectangular room. Use 15% for diagonal, herringbone or rooms with many jogs, and closer to 5% for a plain square room with a full-plank layout and no pattern matching.
How current are the prices?
The HomeAdvisor per-material guides were dated June 17–19, 2026 and the HomeGuide carpet guide October 31, 2025 when accessed in September 2026. Both publishers revise their ranges; the table under the calculator is the snapshot this tool uses.
Can I use this for a whole house?
Yes, enter the total area. Larger jobs often price lower per square foot than the survey range implies, and multi-room jobs add transitions and thresholds the range does not cover, so treat the result as a bracket for comparing quotes rather than a bid.
