Read Nominal Lumber Measurements by Type

Common 2×4 and 2×6 widths finish about 1/2 in. under nominal, but 2×8, 2×10 and 2×12 finish about 3/4 in. under. One rule does not fit all 2-by sizes.

Nominal vs. actual lumber size: the short answer

A nominal lumber size is the familiar trade name used to identify and purchase a board. An actual size is its finished or dressed measurement.

For common dimensional lumber, the nominal-to-actual distinction usually concerns the board’s cross-sectional thickness and width. The physical length of an individual board is also an actual measurement, but length is labeled and verified separately.

The best-known example is a nominal 2×4, which commonly measures 1-1/2 × 3-1/2 inches after drying and surfacing. The Southern Pine Inspection Bureau describes nominal dimensions as established product names and distinguishes them from actual or minimum dressed sizes in its explanation of softwood lumber sizing.

That distinction determines how each measurement should be used:

  • Use nominal size to name, specify, and purchase the general product.
  • Use actual size to calculate layouts, clearances, coverage, elevations, and finished fit.
  • Measure the individual board whenever a small dimensional difference could affect the work.

A materials list might call for “eight 2×4 studs.” That is normal purchasing language. But when calculating framing depth, sizing a notch, choosing fitted hardware, or matching existing construction, use the stated actual dimensions—and verify the stock before cutting.

Nominal and actual dimensions are related, but they are not interchangeable. Entering nominal widths in a cut list can cause one large error or a smaller error repeated across an entire assembly.

There is also an important distinction between a standard actual size and a measured size. “Actual size” may refer to the customary dressed dimensions for a product category, but that does not guarantee the exact measurement of every piece. Moisture condition, surfacing, treatment, manufacturing specifications, and later wood movement can affect what a tape measure or caliper shows.

The standard conversions in this guide primarily cover common dressed North American softwood lumber. Do not apply them automatically to rough-sawn lumber, hardwood, green or pressure-treated material, large timbers, custom-milled stock, or engineered wood products.

How to read a lumber label such as 2×4×96

A three-part lumber label normally follows this order:

  1. Nominal thickness
  2. Nominal width
  3. Stated length

For a board labeled 2×4×96:

  • 2 inches is the nominal thickness.
  • 4 inches is the nominal width.
  • 96 inches is the stated length.

The first two numbers identify the cross-sectional product category. For common dressed dimensional lumber, they are not the board’s finished measurements. The third number identifies length rather than another nominal cross-sectional dimension. Lowe’s illustrates this thickness-width-length convention in its guide to nominal and actual lumber measurements.

A typical 2×4×96 can therefore be read as:

  • Product name: 2×4
  • Typical dressed cross section: 1-1/2 × 3-1/2 inches
  • Stated length: 96 inches, or 8 feet

Do not apply the thickness-and-width conversion to length. A 96-inch label does not mean that you should deduct material from 96 inches using a nominal-sizing formula. At the same time, do not assume every stated length is exact, guaranteed as a minimum, or intentionally supplied overlength. Check the product specification and measure the board when overall length is critical.

  • Thickness runs across the narrow edge of a conventional rectangular board.
  • Width runs across the broad face.
  • Length runs from one end to the other.

Turning a board on edge does not rename its dimensions. Thickness and width follow the labeled order and the product convention, not the board’s position during installation. Square members such as 2×2 and 4×4 stock have equal cross-sectional dimensions.

When ordering, it is usually sufficient to use the nominal designation and length: “2×4×96.” When drawing a fitted assembly or preparing a cut list, record the verified thickness, width, and required cut length separately.

Nominal-to-actual lumber size chart

The values below are typical dressed North American dimensions, not guarantees for every board. ProWood publishes these common conversions for boards, dimensional lumber, posts, and decking in its nominal-versus-actual reference chart.

Measurement note: Verify the label, product specification, and physical stock before making precision cuts or buying fitted hardware. Do not apply these tables automatically to rough-sawn, green, hardwood, custom, or engineered products.

A common pattern appears in the table: these 1-by boards are typically 3/4 inch thick, but the difference between nominal and actual width is not constant. A 1×6 is commonly 5-1/2 inches wide, while a 1×8 is commonly 7-1/4 inches wide. That transition is one reason a universal “subtract half an inch” rule is unreliable.

Notice the width transition again. Common 2×4 and 2×6 lumber finishes approximately 1/2 inch below nominal width, while 2×8, 2×10, and 2×12 lumber commonly finishes approximately 3/4 inch below nominal width.

Supplier-specific stock can differ. In particular, a supplier may sell a product called a 2×8 with a finished width other than 7-1/4 inches. For general planning with common dressed dimensional lumber, however, 1-1/2 × 7-1/4 inches is the typical conversion. The selected product’s specification controls the purchase.

Common posts and larger sizes

These conversions are useful for common dressed posts and larger members, but they should not be extrapolated indefinitely. Large-timber conventions vary by product and surfacing specification, and published references do not always agree on the dimensions of sizes such as 8×8. Consult the mill or manufacturer rather than extending a simple subtraction rule.

Read 5/4 as “five-quarter.” In this decking convention, a nominal 5/4×6 board is commonly listed at approximately 1 inch thick by 5-1/2 inches wide after finishing.

Keep this product separate from ordinary 1-by and 2-by framing lumber. Although its width resembles that of a dressed 1×6 or 2×6, its thickness designation and product category differ.

Why finished lumber is smaller than its nominal size

The short explanation is that lumber is sawn, dried, and surfaced before reaching its familiar finished form.

A simplified production sequence looks like this:

  1. Sawing: Logs are converted into boards or other members.
  2. Drying: Moisture is reduced, and the wood can shrink as it dries.
  3. Surfacing or planing: Material is removed to create smoother, more consistent faces and edges.
  4. Final grading and sale: The finished product is identified by its established nominal trade designation.

For a common nominal 2×4, the familiar result is a dressed board measuring approximately 1-1/2 × 3-1/2 inches. Drying contributes dimensional change, while planing or surfacing physically removes wood, as summarized in Reeb’s overview of rough dimensions, drying, planing, and final size.

It is tempting to say that every modern 2×4 began at exactly 2 inches by 4 inches and was then reduced. That explanation is too absolute. Nominal terms developed from rough-sizing practices, but modern production can begin below the complete nominal dimensions while still leaving enough material to produce the standard dressed size.

It is more accurate to treat 2×4 as standardized product language, not as a guaranteed record of one particular board’s measurement at an earlier production stage. The name allows builders, sellers, designers, and buyers to identify a familiar product class even though its finished dimensions are smaller.

Third-party industry references associate standardized U.S. softwood dimensions with American Softwood Lumber Standard PS 20. Archtoolbox identifies that relationship in its dimensional-lumber reference. Exact tolerances and specialized product requirements depend on the applicable standard and product specification; they should not be inferred from a simplified retail chart.

Why actual dimensions matter in project planning

Nominal names are efficient for material lists and purchasing. Actual dimensions determine whether the material fits.

Framing depth

A wall framed with nominal 2×4 studs has a bare stud depth of approximately 3-1/2 inches, not 4 inches. A complete wall-thickness calculation must begin with that actual stud depth and then account separately for the materials applied to each side.

The same principle applies to blocking, plates, openings, built-up members, and trim returns. If a drawing treats each 2×4 as 4 inches deep, the dimensional error can affect every adjoining component.

Floor framing and repairs

A nominal 2×8 floor member commonly has an actual cross section of approximately 1-1/2 × 7-1/4 inches, according to a North American nominal and dressed-size reference. That 7-1/4-inch depth can matter when:

  • Matching an existing joist or similar floor member
  • Evaluating the elevation of a repaired floor section
  • Planning blocking or a fitted repair component
  • Selecting a connector intended for a measured member
  • Coordinating subfloor and finish-floor transitions

The nominal label alone does not establish whether a replacement will align with an older member. Existing framing may be rough-sawn, custom-milled, from a different production period, or affected by moisture and site conditions.

Matching dimensions alone also does not establish that a replacement is appropriate for a structural application. Nominal-versus-actual sizing solves a measurement problem; it does not replace structural design evaluation.

Cumulative width

Dimensional differences become more obvious when several boards are placed side by side.

Three nominal 1×12 boards do not typically provide 36 inches of solid width. At a usual actual width of 11-1/4 inches each, the total is:

11-1/4 + 11-1/4 + 11-1/4 = 33-3/4 inches

That is 2-1/4 inches less than the nominal total before accounting for intentional gaps, edge treatment, or variation among boards. The underlying 1×12 dimensions are included in the common-size chart above.

This issue appears in shelving, wall paneling, deck layouts, flooring patches, tabletops, and other assemblies that repeat a board width. A small per-board assumption can become a conspicuous error across the completed project.

Hardware and fitted accessories

A cap, bracket, base, sleeve, or connector must fit the measured member—not merely its product name. A nominal 4×4 post is commonly approximately 3-1/2 × 3-1/2 inches, so an accessory intended for a full 4-inch-square member may not fit as expected. Post and accessory guidance likewise recommends checking actual dimensions before selecting fitted hardware.

Read the hardware dimensions and measure the post before ordering. This is especially important for decorative sleeves and caps with little room for adjustment.

Replacement pieces

Measure existing material directly when replacing:

  • Old framing
  • Subfloor components
  • Wood flooring or underlayment
  • Trim and molding
  • Stair parts
  • Rough-sawn members
  • Custom-milled boards
  • Material that must align with an existing finished surface

Do not assume that a modern board with the same nominal name will match the old piece. If the replacement is undersized, the project may require appropriate shimming, packing, or custom milling. If it is oversized, it may require controlled planing or another properly designed adjustment rather than being forced into place.

A practical planning workflow

Use this sequence to keep the trade name and working dimensions separate:

  1. Create the preliminary material list with nominal product names. This keeps the list recognizable at the lumberyard or supplier.

  2. Find the stated actual dimensions. Check the product label, retailer listing, mill sheet, or manufacturer specification.

  3. Revise the drawing and cut list using actual dimensions. Use actual thickness and width for clearances, total coverage, elevations, and fitted joints.

  4. Measure critical stock. Verify the individual pieces involved in tight fits or alignment with existing work.

  5. Mark cuts from one reliable reference. Avoid repeatedly transferring nominal assumptions into the work.

  6. Allow for the cutting and selection process. Material estimates should account for saw kerfs, end trimming, defects, unusable sections, layout choices, and mistakes. The appropriate allowance depends on the material and project; there is no universal waste percentage.

  7. Recheck before assembly. Confirm the dimensions controlling final fit before drilling, fastening, gluing, or cutting an irreversible joint.

When the standard conversion chart does not apply

There is no universal subtraction formula that accurately converts every nominal lumber product to its actual size.

Rules such as “subtract half an inch” work for selected common dimensions but fail elsewhere. A nominal 1×8 typically loses more than half an inch in width, while 5/4 decking follows a different thickness convention. Hardwood and large timbers require other approaches.

Rough-sawn lumber

Rough-sawn lumber has not received the same final surfacing as dressed dimensional stock. It may be closer to its nominal size, but “closer” does not mean exact.

Rough stock can have saw marks, uneven edges, dimensional variation, or additional material intended for later milling. Confirm whether the mill’s listed dimensions are targets, minimums, or measured finished values. Kreg’s lumber-sizing guide similarly cautions that rough-cut stock may be closer to nominal dimensions without guaranteeing an exact match.

Green lumber

Green lumber contains more moisture than dried stock and can continue changing dimensions as it dries. The amount and direction of movement depend on the material and its condition.

If green lumber must fit an existing opening or establish a precise floor elevation, its dimensions at purchase may not represent its later dimensions. Consider the applicable product specification and anticipated service condition.

Pressure-treated lumber

Do not assume that a pressure-treated product matches an untreated board simply because both carry the same nominal label.

Check both the product data and the physical stock. A generic treatment-related adjustment should not be used because one dimensional change does not apply to every pressure-treated product.

Decking

Decking conventions should be read separately from framing-lumber conversions. A nominal 5/4×6 decking board commonly measures approximately 1 × 5-1/2 inches, but other profiles, materials, and suppliers may use different finished dimensions.

Posts and large timbers

Common dressed 4×4, 4×6, and 6×6 sizes are reasonably consistent across the references supporting the chart. Larger timbers are less suitable for a generalized table because surfacing conventions and published dimensions can conflict.

For a large timber, use the exact product specification. Do not extrapolate from a 4×4 or 6×6 conversion.

Custom-milled, glulam, and engineered products

Custom-milled stock can be produced to a requested rough or finished size. Glue-laminated members can have product-specific dimensions, and engineered products may follow conventions different from ordinary dimensional lumber.

Read the manufacturer’s technical information rather than translating the product name with a framing-lumber chart. The same principle applies to specialty flooring blanks, stair components, laminated members, and proprietary systems.

Supplier-specific stock

Even a familiar nominal name may refer to a supplier-specific product. For example, Baird Brothers lists its own nominal 2×8 stock at 1-1/2 × 7-1/2 inches, rather than the common dressed dimensional-lumber value of 1-1/2 × 7-1/4 inches. This supplier-specific example shows why the selected product dimensions must control the purchase.

The difference does not necessarily mean one listing is wrong. One may describe common standardized dimensional lumber, while another describes a particular manufacturer’s finish-grade or specialty product.

Four different sizes that are easy to confuse

For precise work, distinguish among these concepts:

  • Nominal trade name: The familiar product designation, such as 2×4.
  • Rough-sawn size: The dimensions after sawing but before some or all final surfacing.
  • Standard or minimum dressed size: The specified finished category associated with a standardized product.
  • Measured size: What the individual piece actually measures in its present condition.

These measurements may be close, but they are not synonyms.

Species, moisture condition, surfacing, treatment, supplier specifications, manufacturing variation, and later environmental movement can all affect a measured piece. If fit, floor elevation, replacement thickness, or hardware compatibility depends on a small dimensional difference, consult the product specification and measure the stock.

Hardwood quarter sizes and surfacing terms

Hardwood lumber commonly uses quarter-inch thickness notation, so the softwood dimensional-lumber chart should not be applied automatically.

In this system:

  • 4/4, pronounced “four-quarter,” means a nominal rough thickness of 1 inch.
  • 5/4, pronounced “five-quarter,” means a nominal rough thickness of 1-1/4 inches.
  • Additional quarter sizes follow the same naming pattern.

These labels describe nominal rough thickness, not guaranteed finished thickness. The final board depends on the surfacing and milling it receives.

Common surfacing terms include:

  • S1S: Surfaced on one side
  • S2S: Surfaced on two sides
  • S4S: Surfaced on four sides

Surfacing removes material, so boards that began in the same quarter-thickness category may not have the same finished thickness if one remains rough and another is S2S or S4S.

As a listed example, Archtoolbox gives the following 4/4 hardwood thicknesses:

These are reference values, not guarantees for every hardwood supplier or milling process. Confirm the seller’s stated thickness for the material being purchased.

Hardwood width may also be random rather than standardized like common softwood framing widths. A listing might identify quarter thickness and species while requiring buyers to select among varying board widths. Other suppliers may offer surfaced boards with fixed finished widths.

This matters in flooring and finish work. Before planning a flooring patch, transition, threshold, cabinet component, or furniture part, determine:

  1. The quarter-thickness designation
  2. Whether that designation refers to rough or surfaced stock
  3. The surfacing condition
  4. The stated finished thickness
  5. Whether width is fixed or random
  6. The measurement of the particular board

For replacement flooring, measure the existing material at an exposed or inconspicuous cross section when possible.

Board-foot purchasing practices are separate from this guidance. The evidence does not establish one universal rule under which nominal, rough, or surfaced dimensions govern every hardwood transaction. Ask the seller how the material is measured and priced rather than assuming.

Metric conversions and a lumber-buying checklist

Do not convert a nominal inch label directly to metric. Converting “2 inches by 4 inches” produces a metric representation of the nominal name, not the board’s typical dressed cross section.

Instead:

  1. Identify the nominal product.
  2. Find its corresponding actual dimensions.
  3. Convert those actual dimensions to metric.

A soft conversion expresses the nearest metric equivalent of the actual inch measurement. The American Wood Council recommends converting actual sizes rather than nominal labels and provides these common soft metric lumber conversions:

These metric values are conversions of common actual dimensions. They do not prove that every board will measure exactly the listed number of millimeters. Rounding, product specifications, moisture, and individual variation still apply.

Metric drawings should also make the product designation clear. Depending on the audience, a useful note might read:

Nominal 2×6 lumber; typical actual size approximately 38 × 140 mm. Verify supplied stock.

That wording preserves the North American purchasing name while giving the dimensions needed for coordination.

Lumber-buying checklist

Before buying or cutting, work through this checklist:

  • Identify the product category. Is it common dimensional softwood, a board, decking, a post, rough-sawn stock, hardwood, a timber, or an engineered product?

  • Read the entire label. Look for nominal dimensions, stated actual or minimum dimensions, length, species, grade, and other relevant product information.

  • Determine the material’s condition. Is it rough, dressed, green, treated, kiln-dried, or sold under another moisture or processing description?

  • Look for surfacing terms. S1S, S2S, and S4S identify how many sides have been surfaced and can help explain the board’s dimensions.

  • Consult the manufacturer or mill specification. This is especially important for pressure-treated lumber, decking profiles, timbers, engineered products, and supplier-specific stock.

  • Measure thickness and width. Use a tape measure for general construction work. Use an appropriately precise rule, caliper, or other measuring tool when replacement thickness or a tight fit demands greater resolution.

  • Measure critical length. Do not infer exact length behavior from the nominal thickness-and-width convention.

  • Inspect more than one piece when consistency matters. A single board may not represent an entire bundle.

  • Check the existing assembly. For repairs, record the actual dimensions, profile, and elevation of the material being matched.

  • Confirm hardware fit. Compare the measured member with the accessory’s stated opening or compatibility information.

  • Recheck before cutting or assembly. Verify the controlling dimensions before an irreversible operation.
